The Village of Scarsdale offers curbside food scrap pickup to support waste reduction and regional composting efforts. By separating food scraps from household trash, residents are helping divert material from the landfill.

Getting Started: The Basics

1. Sign-Up Required

To participate in curbside food scrap pickup, households must register to be included in the Sanitation Department’s collection route. There is no fee to participate, and enrollment is encouraged but not required.

To sign up, please complete the online form or email composting@scarsdale.gov.

2. Bins & Compostable Bags

A Village-approved bin (shown below) is required for curbside pickup.

Starter kits and compostable bags are available for purchase:

  • Online: Visit the Online Order Form in the Program Catalog. Orders will be available for contactless pickup outside the Recycling Office the next business day.
  • In Person: At the Recycling Center Office, 110 Secor Road, open Monday–Saturday, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Medium Kit: $20
Large Kit: $25
Credit or debit card only.

3. Pickup Details

Food scrap pickup occurs weekly on your first trash collection day (Monday or Tuesday).
If you’re unsure, check the Sanitation Schedule for your pickup day and any holiday week changes.

Place your bin curbside by 7:00 AM on your scheduled pickup day.

How to Recycle Food Scraps

Recycling food scraps is easy: Collect, Transfer, and Place Curbside (or Drop Off). A brief Food Scrap Recycling Guide is available online, including translations in Mandarin, Spanish, and Japanese.

COLLECT

Use a countertop pail to collect all types of food scraps. All food is accepted, but be sure to keep out non-food and non-compostable items. Compostable bags may be used, but plastic bags are not permitted.

TRANSFER

Move your scraps into a Village-approved curbside bin for weekly pickup or transport to the Recycling Center. Bins should be stored indoors or in a garage between uses.

PLACE CURBSIDE OR DROP OFF

Place your bin curbside by 7:00 AM on your collection day, or bring food scraps to the Recycling Center during drop-off hours.

Note: The food scrap drop-off site at the Scarsdale Recycling Center (110 Secor Road) is open to all residents Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM—no registration required. Residents who wish to have their food scraps collected at the curb must register for the curbside pickup program. Please register online or email composting@scarsdale.gov.
