Volunteer to Serve

Letter from the Mayor and Board

Dear Scarsdale Residents,

Welcome to the Village of Scarsdale’s Volunteer Homepage! Our community has long thrived on a proud tradition of civic engagement, thanks to the time and talent of dedicated residents like you.

We invite you to continue this legacy by serving on one of our volunteer boards, councils, committees, or commissions. To explore available opportunities, browse the listings and click “Learn More” for detailed information on each group.

When applying, you’ll be asked to select up to three areas of interest and provide as much detail as possible. You may also email a résumé or background information to the Village Clerk after submitting your online application. You’ll receive an automatic confirmation once your materials are received. For assistance, contact the Village Clerk at 914-722-1175 or clerk@scarsdale.gov.

Please note that vacancies vary from year to year and are not always predictable. While most appointments are made in April, openings may arise at any time. The Village Board will do its best to match your interests and experience with the right opportunity.

Thank you for your interest in public service and for helping to uphold the spirit of excellence and civic pride that defines the Village of Scarsdale.

Sincerely,
Scarsdale Mayor & Board of Trustees

Membership Guidelines

Membership Guidelines for Appointed Boards, Councils, and Committees

1. Residency

To be eligible to serve, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, at least 18 years old, and reside in the Village of Scarsdale, as required by the Village Code. The Board of Trustees may appoint no more than one non-resident to certain advisory boards or committees, including the Committee for Historic Preservation, provided the individual resides within the Scarsdale Union Free School District. This non-resident exception does not apply to the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of Architectural Review, Board of Ethics, Board of Assessment Review, Trustees of the Scarsdale Public Library, Cable Commission, or Conservation Advisory Council.

2. Civic Interest and Involvement

Most appointments are based on a demonstrated commitment to civic life through prior volunteer involvement. These positions aim to uphold Scarsdale’s strong community standards through engaged local service.

3. Professional or Business Affiliation

Certain Boards, Councils, and Committees require specific professional skills or training—either mandated by law or identified by the Village Board of Trustees as beneficial to fulfilling their responsibilities.

4. Specialized Knowledge

Certain committees benefit from members with relevant lived or professional experience—for example:

  • Cable Television Commission: Communications industry knowledge
  • Advisory Council on People with Disabilities: Personal or professional disability insight
  • Advisory Council on Youth: Experience working with young people
  • Advisory Council on Parks & Recreation: Parents active in youth recreation programs
