School Tax Late Penalty Update From the Mayor Mayor Justin Arest provided another update on the school tax late payment penalty issue at the Village Board’s meeting on Tuesday, March 12: “We understand there are many residents who are frustrated with, and upset by, what has transpired. They, like the Village Board, are eager to seek a resolution on this matter. Our hope is to offer some relief in response to what we believe was a failure by the United States Post Office to deliver tax bills in late August/early September 2023. However, determining exactly what that relief will look like and when residents can hope to receive any relief will take some time. I want to reassure you that the Village is doing everything in its power to advocate for our residents and to work toward a solution.” Read the full statement here.

Bring on the New (Motor)bikes! The Village thanks New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer for selecting the Scarsdale Police Department to receive $100,000 for the purchase of two new motorcycles, a trailer and two police radios through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) Local Community Assistance Program (LOCAP) grant fund. SPD motorcycles M2 and M3 have been in service for 16 and 13 years, respectively, and are incurring increasing maintenance and service costs as they age. SPD Officer Nicholas Kringas alerted Chief Andrew Matturro about the program and applied for the grant on behalf of the Village.

Vine-Killers Wanted (Again) Community members are invited to help save the Village’s trees from invasive vines that can smother trees by blocking the sun and girdling tree trunks. The vines must be removed before the next growing season when the leaves are out so that it is easier to see and cut the vines. Members of the Friends of Scarsdale Parks will hold a vine cutting session on Sunday, March 17 from 1pm to 3pm at Red Maple Swamp in Greenacres Park (Valley Road and Gorham Road; entrance for Red Maple Swamp.) Attendees will learn the ropes of vine identification, removal and safety. Dress appropriately (gloves, long sleeves, boots, safety goggles) and bring pruning shears if you have them. Some equipment will be available to borrow. Attendees must be 18 years or older. Please contact elaine.weir.sherman@gmail.com if you would like to participate or for more information. We only cut vines in good weather so if it is raining an email will be sent canceling the session.
