Witness Stones Dedicated at Wayside Cottage

On June 7, the Junior League of Central Westchester, Dennis Culliton of the Witness Stones Project, genealogist and historian Teresa Vega, and faculty and students from Scarsdale High School unveiled the “stone” above and seven others, culminating months of effort. They had pooled their resources and their passion for social justice to begin uncovering one of the untold stories of Scarsdale’s Wayside Cottage. They learned that during the 18th Century, the Cottage’s owner Thomas Hadden enslaved Rose Heady, who bore him seven children, freeing Rose and their offspring upon his death, making them the first known free Black family in Westchester County. Many generations later, their descendants, including historian Teresa Vega, have carried on Rose’s legacy in the county. Click here for the full story.

Board and Councils Celebrated for Service to Scarsdale

On May 29, the Village of Scarsdale held its annual celebration of the tireless volunteers who serve on Boards, Councils and Committees each year. Mayor Justin Arest said, “In many ways, the Boards and Councils reception is a celebration of the volunteer experience in Scarsdale. I have had the fortune to work with, become friends with, and learn from so many of my neighbors that I may have never gotten to know without volunteering. I am so grateful for everyone's willingness to serve and continue our community’s Non Sibi tradition.” Click here for more.

Mayor Proclaims June 7 National Gun Violence Awareness Day

On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Barack Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, the 15-year-old was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Wear Orange is now observed every June, including in Scarsdale. Mayor Justin Arest proclaimed June 7, 2024, to be National Gun Violence Awareness Day in an effort to raise awareness about and put an end to gun violence as more than 43,000 Americans are killed, and approximately 76,000 more are shot and wounded, every year. The Village also honored the efforts of Pat Colella, a dedicated gun violence activist and Scarsdale resident, who passed away in May 2023.

Police Department Enhances Radio Communications

The Village of Scarsdale Police Department extended its Mutual Aid and Rapid Response Plan Inter-Municipal Agreement with Westchester County, which establishes procedures for the Police Departments of Westchester County to provide uninterrupted delivery of police service during those situations that exceed the resources of any individual Department. Scarsdale has been part of this important partnership for more than 30 years. The Village also approved an agreement with the County for furnishment and installation of a tri-band (VHF-UHF-700 MHz) communications antenna to replace the current single band VHF antenna on the Village of Scarsdale Public Safety Building. The new antenna will enhance the ability of first responders to safely and reliably communicate with each other through the County’s system for public safety radio communication. The County will fund this replacement through State grants at no cost to the Village, and will provide eight Motorola APX-8500 mobile radios, which will be installed in Scarsdale Police administrative vehicles. The County operates public safety radio communication systems for the County Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Department of Emergency Services (DES), the Department of Public Works (DPWT) Bee-Line transit operations, as well as for the communications between the County and emergency first responders throughout Westchester and the surrounding jurisdictions for simultaneous communications amongst all participating agencies. The Police Department has also purchased radio equipment through an intermunicipal agreement with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) to communicate smoothly with local law enforcement agencies in Westchester and other neighboring jurisdictions.
