Village Trustees Vote in Favor of Land Use Changes

Meeting their goal not to extend past a six-month moratorium on certain land use building projects in residential areas as they reexamined related Village Code, the Scarsdale Village Board of Trustees, following a third public hearing (May 28, June 25 and July 9), voted 4-0 to accept the recommendations of BFJ Planning on July 9. Village Staff is working on a summary and FAQ explaining the changes. The document will be released as soon as possible.

Fox Meadow Road Gas Line Replacement on Pause

A note from Scarsdale Village Department of Public Works Superintendent Jeff Coleman on the pause in work on Con Edison’s Fox Meadow Road gas line replacement project: Con Edison is currently re-designing several aspects of their project based on sewer, water and storm drainage interferences that they have encountered along Fox Meadow Road. Once developed, those designs will be submitted to the Village for approval prior to commencing with work. In the interim, resurfacing of completed areas along Fox Meadow Road will be advanced in July. We appreciate your patience and will provide further updates at a later time.

Popham and Chase Intersection Improvements on the Way

Later this month, in concert with scheduled paving work for the Village Center, the Village will be making improvements to the intersection at Popham Road and Chase Road. Consultant DTS Provident Design Engineering prepared a plan to improve pedestrian safety through various traffic measures including the following:

  • Widening of the crosswalks on Popham Road to better correlate with the angles of the intersection.
  • New pedestrian signals on the northeast and southeast signal poles.
  • New ADA pedestrian ramps in the northwest and southeast corners of the intersection.
  • Relocation of the stop line on the eastbound approach of Popham Road at the intersection.
  • A new bollard system on the northeast corner (where westbound drivers on Popham Road turn right onto Chase Road) so that the bollards are more spread out without the elongated base plates. This will still direct vehicles while allowing ample room for pedestrians to pass including wheelchair-bound pedestrians.
  • New signage to alert drivers that pedestrians may be present.

Village staff have reviewed these recommendations from DTS Provident and believe they will greatly enhance the pedestrian safety at this intersection. Click here to read more.

The Village will be sending out communications in advance of the downtown paving work, so stay tuned for more information and be sure you’re subscribed to our press releases and notifications here.

Scarsdale Neighborhoods Hold Annual July 4 Celebrations

The Arthur Manor and Greenacres Neighborhoods held their traditional 4th of July celebrations last week, drawing big crowds to participate in parades, games and picnics. Mayor Justin Arest, Deputy Mayor Dara Gruenberg, and Trustee Jeremy Wise attended both events. Arest said, “I am always so impressed by the Arthur Manor and Greenacres Neighborhoods, their recognition of July 4, the turnouts, as well as the level of volunteerism displayed. Independence Day is a day to celebrate as well as a day to remember that our freedom and the rights we enjoy today aren’t free. We must always recognize and pay tribute to those that risked their lives and especially those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. County Executive George Latimer, State Senator Shelley Mayer, and Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins stopped by for the festivities.

Scarsdale Day Camp Food Drive Shows ‘Camp Cares’

Each summer, the Scarsdale Recreation Day Camps participate in the WRAPS (Westchester Recreation And Parks Society) Camps Cares About Hunger food drive to benefit Feeding Westchester. Over the years, the Scarsdale camps have donated several thousand pounds of non-perishable food through their efforts. Now in its 10th year, the camp and pool directors have teamed together to hold a week-long Camps Care About Hunger food drive July 22-26, where campers and their families can make donations, and culminating at the pool during our event-filled Superhero’s Day on July 27, where pool patrons will be encouraged to donate items as well. The intent is to make everyone involved a Superhero!

Additional Renovations for Softball/Baseball Fields

With the successful renovation of four baseball and softball fields by Greenway Property Services, Inc., that allowed the Parks and Rec Department to open fields sooner and more often, in addition to reducing the amount of time spent preparing fields after rain, the Village Trustees approved three additional fields for resurfacing and repair. Crossway Field 2, Supply Field 1, and Hyatt Field 1 will receive a total of $194,500 worth of work to improve those fields as well. In addition, the Village and School District will announce a new date for the joint field study meeting and presentation as soon as possible.
