PUBLIC SAFETY SPOTLIGHT SPD & SFD: Better Together Through Interdepartmental TrainingThe Scarsdale Police Department (SPD) and the Scarsdale Fire Department (SFD) had their latest training collaboration, which is a point of pride for SPD Chief Steven DelBene and SFD Chief Christopher Mytych, who are both dedicated to making the community a safer place for residents. With police training facilities scarce, the ability to use the fire department’s training facility was a win-win for both departments to work side-by-side. In this particular training session led by SFD breaching instructor Captain Tim Duffy, the first responders learned about forcible entry based on the type of door and structure they need to get through in order for firefighters to complete an interior fire attack or a primary search in a timely manner, or for police to get to something or someone that has been barricaded or a person who is in distress. “We are grateful for the collaborative relationship that our departments share both in the field and on the training ground,” Chief Mytych said. Chief DelBene added, “We now have a local resource right next door that we’re able to use thanks to the great collaborative relationships we share with our fire department. I look forward to working with Chief Mytych on this and future training opportunities that benefit both departments and the community.”

PUBLIC SAFETY Scarsdale Action for Youth Shares Information About Teen GamblingThe Village of Scarsdale is sharing this message from Scarsdale Action for Youth (SAY), which works to promote the health and safety of local teens: - With the Super Bowl, March Madness, online gaming, and winter boredom, gambling opportunities are everywhere – often hidden in apps and games.
- Teens who gamble are at higher risk for other addictions – they are 2x more likely to binge drink, 3x more likely to use illegal drugs, and 4x more likely than adults to develop a gambling addiction.
- Warning signs to watch for include: having much more, or less, money than usual, borrowing money from family or friends, constant interest in sports odds, scores, or betting apps, amongst others.
SAY encourages parents to talk openly with their children about the risks of gambling and online betting, set limits on apps, games, and spending, and seek help early. Visit https://www.sayscarsdale.org/gambling for more information.

PUBLIC SAFETY Prescription Drug Lock-up or Disposal Can Save LivesYou can help prevent youth prescription drug misuse by locking up medication in your household, and by properly disposing of any drugs your family is no longer using. Please take any unwanted medications to the Scarsdale Police Department’s drug disposal unit, located at Police Headquarters (50 Tompkins Road) on the second floor, which can be accessed by elevator. By participating in this program, residents will also feel at ease that their unwanted pills and medication—prescription and over-the-counter medication, medication samples, vitamins, and veterinary medications—don’t end up in a landfill or water supply. Items not accepted include: narcotics, liquid medications, syringes, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, hydrogen peroxide, empty containers, inhalers, hazardous medical waste and sharps. Click here for more information about the SPD’s Drug Disposal Program.
